What the Interview Could Not Tell You, Ninety Days Will

You said yes to the version of the job you heard in the interview. The next three months tell you how much of that was true, and how much of it was you hearing what you wanted to hear.

You said yes to the version of the job you heard in the interview. The next three months tell you how much of that was true and how much of it was you hearing what you wanted to hear.

The first week proves nothing. Inductions, logins, a desk, and a folder of policies nobody finishes reading. Every business looks organised for a week. The real picture only forms once that settles and the job becomes ordinary.

Think back to what actually convinced you. The independence you were promised, the way the team spoke about each other, the feeling in the room the day you came in. Three months on, look honestly at whether that thing is missing or whether it simply looks different from how you pictured it. A manager who checks in often is not automatically a red flag; it might be how they support the whole team. A quieter office is not automatically a warning sign; it might just be how that team works. The pattern is what matters, not one flat week.

Notice whether the gap between what you were told and what you are living is closing or widening. If it is widening, say something before you decide anything. A calm, direct conversation about expectations versus reality gives the business a chance to respond and gives you information you did not have. How clearly you raised it counts for as much as how the business reacts.

If it still does not work, the outcome matters less than what you take from it. Sometimes it is mutual, both sides quietly agreeing the fit was never quite right. Sometimes you leave because staying stopped making sense. Sometimes the decision is made for you. None of that makes the ninety days wasted; it means you found out in three months what some people take a year to work out.

In three months, will you be able to say clearly what changed your mind, or just that something feels different?
